• Waldorf Astoria; Park City, Utah

So now Utah’s drinking laws have been considerably loosened, the Waldorf Astoria in Park City is the ideal location to unwind in luxury after a day of tough skiing at one of the country’s most prominent ski resorts. • The Little Nell; Aspen, Colorado

The Little Nell, located at the foot of the Ajax, or Aspen, is now the only five-star, 5-star hotel in the region, making it the logical choice for anybody looking for a resort that has hosted hundreds of celebrities.

• Squaw Valley

Squaw Valley also referred to as Olympic Valley, is situated 11 miles from the historic city of Truckee and is a haven for high and deep skiers. Shane McConkey’s old home in the neighborhood; if he loved it, you must have the goods. If you travel to Reno, you could get to one of the Northern Lake Tahoe resorts fast (RNO).

The 1960 Olympic Games were held in Squaw Valley. You have the option of staying in the town near the lifts or moments away at the Lodge at Squaw Creek by complimentary shuttle.

• Alta Resort

Alta is another one of those iconic resorts that you really should visit at least once in your life. It’s a ski-only destination. There used to be more hotels that prohibited snowboarders; if my memory serves me well (and it very well may), I believe Deer Valley was formerly a resort town that later opened to snowboarders. 

Ajax, or what is today known as Aspen Mountain, was formerly a skiers-only paradise. Although the Alta Peruvian Resort is not a ski-in/ski-out property, it does provide a complimentary shuttle to the runs. This is an actual European-style resort with individual and shared accommodations, warm and inviting, delicious dinners, and a beautiful outdoor pool to unwind after a long day on the slopes.

• Ritz Carlton; Lake Tahoe, California

This brand-name lodge, with its 5-star spa and a variety of excellent dining options, is even more appealing than one of the very few luxury resorts in this premium ski vacation area.

• The Majestic Yosemite Hotel; Yosemite, California

The hotel, formerly recognized as the historic Ahwahnee, was built in 1927 and features vaulted ceilings, marble fireplaces, stenciled columns, hand-woven decorative items, and heavenly stained-glass windows through which guests can take in some of Yosemite’s most stunning views, including Yosemite Falls, half dome, and Glacier Point.

Although the skiing at Badger Pass and Yosemite Ski & Snowboard isn’t as good as some of the other resorts on this shortlist, with such beautiful lodgings, you’re unlikely to want to leave.

• Whiteface Lodge; Lake Placid, New York

Whiteface resort is the ultimate of a luxury cabin in the woods, supported completely by wood beams sourced from the local area. Ice skiing, outdoor hot springs, a huge movie house, nightly fireside readings, as well as a vintage ice cream parlor make it the ideal backdrop for a Hallmark picture.

• Stein Erikson; Park City, Utah
